The Making of the Aeron Chair
Completed Product
My experience working on the ergonomics of this revolutionary chair heavily influenced my understanding of product comfort and health.
During the development of the chair, Chadwick team consulted with numerous physicians and chiropractors, which led to a counterintuitive realization: making a product extremely comfortable is not always the best ergonomic choice. The medical experts advised that a chair should actually be a little "discomfortable" so that users are prompted to get up and walk around. This prevents people from remaining completely sedentary, which contributes to health issues like obesity and heart attacks. Ultimately, this experience taught me that an effective design must sometimes balance extreme comfort with the practical health needs of the user, encouraging healthy movement rather than prolonged stillness.
